Happy 4th of July!

It honestly doesn’t feel like a happy 4th of July. It sometimes feels like our nation is sliding into chaos, apathy, and something that is not the land of the free that I hope we all dream it should be. We have filled our prisons and we build more. We have filled the pockets of corporate America and they want more. Our leaders promote violence against women, minorities, and a free press but we still suffer them. We have lost our standing as a nation that leads the free world, and we are in danger of losing the freedoms that we and our families have fought for and sacrificed so much for.

As criminal defense lawyers, our fight was to preserve the freedoms and protections enshrined in the Bill of Rights. To apply them to the lowest in our society, those whom many feel do not deserve them. To preserve them for and sometimes apply them to the privileged in our society, those who suddenly realize why we have them when they themselves are facing loss of liberty, property, family, and happiness.

This year for the first time I have felt that I can understand how nations devolve into madness and chaos. Watching Venezuala’s fall has been an education in real time. Learning more about dictatorships and how they came to power has been enlightening. Watching the new empowerment of white supremacy, the denigration of a free press, and the empowerment of a single religion at the expense of others in our own country has been disheartening.

I will keep fighting to defend the damned, the forgotten, and sometimes the rich and privileged in our society. To make sure that we do not lose the First, Second, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments because we failed to use them. We all do what we can with what we have from the position we find ourselves in. If you are a patriot in a position of power, now is the time for you to defend our nation and preserve our freedom for future generations.

Our nation is a free nation that was created by the people and intended to serve the people. All of the people: Black, White, Brown, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Democrat, Republican, Men, Women, Young, Old, Healthy, Disabled, Gay, Straight, Transgender, Fat, Thin, Ugly, and Beautiful. It was born out of desperation to escape a tyrant who ruled from afar, who had no connection with the people, who oppressed the people, and who saw our land and people only as a way to enrich himself. Let’s celebrate Independence Day. Happy 4th of July!

“The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution,
are worth defending at all hazards, and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks…
It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation,
enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us
by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them
by the artifices of false and designing men.”
